Literature and General Paper were two subjects I struggled tremendously in the two years of Junior College. In the case of literature, I had trouble understanding the comparative skills and the expression of ideas to be made in literary terms when engaging with the unseen portion of the syllabus. Whereas for the five texts, I had difficulty analyzing and deconstructing the questions asked. In my entire two years, the U and S grades were the common grades I would get for this subject, never going beyond an E grade. However, under the tutelage of Mr Yap, I managed to achieve a quality grade, a B grade, in English Literature in the A’levels. Mr Yap taught me the skills I needed to pass and do well in Literature, such as the comparative skills and deconstructing of questions. He also taught me how to make effective notes for a subject seemingly abstract and creative. This helped me revision nearing the A’levels. Furthermore, he went the extra mile to mark the multiple literature essays that I would write and scan to him. The constant feedback, revision and rewriting of essays proved useful as the question posed during the examinations was a similar question we encountered before. This boosted my confidence, despite the fact that I feared the worst and only expected a D grade for my A’levels English Literature paper.
In addition, General Paper was another difficult subject to study for. I was terribly lacking in language, due to my poor grammar skills and lacking vocabulary. This was made worse with the lack of knowledge of real world issues. Thankfully, Mr Yap’s tips in GP aided me in boosting my content. This helped me to eventually achieve another quality grade, a B grade, in A’level General Paper. For this subject, I have never achieved anything more than an E grade in my school examinations and tests. However, under Mr Yap’s tutelage, I managed to increase my awareness of global affairs as well as improve my comprehension skills for paper 2. While in the past I hardly managed to complete the papers for my school examinations, the many practices that Mr Yap drilled me in has helped me answer the questions in the A’level examinations more effectively and efficiently.
In a nutshell, I am extremely grateful to Mr Yap for stretching me to my fullest potential in both English Literature and General Paper. Without him, my tremendous improvement in the A’level examinations would not have been made possible.
